Oxfordshire Cricket is delighted to hear that at the AGM of the Association of Cricket Statisticians (ACS) which was held last Saturday, Julian Lawton Smith was awarded the Brooke Lambert Trophy as Cricket Statistician of the Year for 2021. This recognised his management of the project to collect and publish definitive match scores for all Minor County matches from 1895 to 1914. His role was originally as the Oxfordshire representative but for the last 10 years, he has led the project which has seen 21 books published over the last 23 years.
The ACS is the leading body on cricket statistics and their President advises the ICC on relevant matters as the game expands to new competitions and formats. Previous winners of the award have included TMS statisticians Bill Frindall and Andrew Samson so Julian is in good company!
Julian Lawton Smith said
“Naturally, I am delighted to win this award. My interest in cricket statistics started at a very young age and found a focus when compiling career records for Oxfordshire players in the 1980s. This in turn led to my involvement with the project to research Minor County matches prior to World War One. It has been a very time consuming, yet exceedingly rewarding, project involving representatives from many counties – it’s certainly been a team effort. Now it is very satisfying to see the success of our publications recognised through the presentation of this trophy.”
Oxfordshire Cricket would like to congratulate Julian on this fantastic achievement, which is a testament to his years of hard work.
